Kids/teenagers/young adults have always used the web primarily as a place to meet and communicate with their friends. Those less proficient types saw it as some sort of advertising/shop thing because they never really understood the concepts. Nowadays the collaborative element has become mainstream, so old media is finally beginning to cop on - but still have a long way to go.
