Yea I still haven’t actually changed/bought it yet but I think I will have to buy a mac laptop soon as my old windows laptop has kicked in. Still working of a PC with vista from Dell in the office which is fine.

Must check out the refurb place.

I recently got a refurb Mac (thanks to Cormac for pointing me to them!) and while I haven’t been using it as much as I would have liked it is definitely a good buy.
One of my housemates got a laptop with Vista and has had one issue after another - I can’t see why anyone would want to use it.

I decided to switch to Mac because of Vista’s need for high spec hardware in order to run it properly. Why spend all that money on hardware to run a OS which is copying OS X’s features when you can buy a Mac with OS X on it?

Switched to MacBook Pro recently, I echo Eoghan’s sentiments above.

Some of the applications have amazing time-saving potential. I was jotting down some information architecture notes recently in Omni-outliner, imported them straight into OmniGraffle and Bam! a beautiful looking visual site map in seconds. Will never use Visio again, thank God

Also cost-wise, I saved quite a few shekels by buying a refurbished model from the Apple store.

yeah, hmm, guys, I am using Macs for many years now and one thing I noticed with them, the life span of those new machines is ridiculously short. My first Mac, a G3 PowerBook still runs OK even though it’s 8 years old now, another one I have , G4 iBook, 3 years old, no problem, the last one I bought to the studio, G5 yoke, 1 year old and pretty much needs replacement. I already had it replaced by apple once and now it’s acting up big tme again. Most of people I know who had bought a MAc over the last year had problems with the machine already. Same with other Apple accessories.

Macs are great machines, but I reckon Apple should reconsider it’s strategy, instead of all those useless gadgets they should do what they do best, make enormously reliable machines, like they used to in the past.

Just my 3 cents….

I was a long time Windows user until October last. 1 to 2 weeks after the switch I knew I’d never go back. The hardware is far superior and the operating system is a pleasure to use. It just cuts-out the bullsh*t that everyday use of a Windows machine involves.

Exactly the same reasons I always stayed away from the Mac. Found myself in the identical situation too in November, planned to get a laptop once January arrived, decided to get a Mac. Wound up in Toronto in early December, grabbed one there and haven’t looked back. MacBook Pro all the way. If you take a trip to Toronto and pay the money for the flight out, you’ll still save money in buying the laptop over there (flight and all) compared to buying in Dublin.

Never got into the Mac thing properly until December last, now its a total breeze and don’t think I’d actually go back to a Windows laptop…..

I switched to a MacBook Pro a few months ago after years of Windows and generic-PC use. From a web-development point of view I am really glad I did. A huge plus is being able to run all the Mac browsers and run all the Windows and Linux browsers in Parallels VM.

TextMate is a really good text editor and the Mac OS X command line is so much more powerful than on Windows. Before the Mac I hardly used the command line, now I use it everyday all day and it speeds web-dev up.

The laptop itself is very good too and is perfectly capable of running Windows Vista (I have it on dual boot for… well just for games actually
